“Our caravan stopped along the road before we were to enter Germany. Mother washed some of our clothes and told my sister Ethel and I to hang them on a line our Father and my brother had strung. While I was hanging, a pretty lady hung some of her wash. The first thing I noticed was the bodice around her neck was too low. She said ‘hello’ and I nodded before hanging another shirt. Ethel nudged me and shook her head. The woman wore bright red earrings and silver bangles on her wrist. She smiled and laughed at the men walking by us. I guess she wasn’t one of our people. I never did see her again.” – Annie’s Journey - 1904
